Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our curated Japanese collection.
How do you ensure the authenticity of your antiques?
Every piece at Shibui is personally sourced and vetted by our experts in Japan. We provide a Certificate of Authenticity for all major furniture pieces and provide detailed historical context regarding the era, materials, and craftsmanship for every item in our collection.
Do you offer international shipping for large furniture items?
Yes, we ship worldwide. Large items like Tansu chests and Mizuya are professionally crated and shipped via specialized white-glove art couriers to ensure they arrive safely at your doorstep, regardless of your location.
What is your return policy for antique items?
Due to the unique and fragile nature of antiques, all sales are final. However, we provide high-resolution photos and detailed condition reports prior to purchase. If an item is damaged during transit, please contact us within 48 hours for an insurance claim and resolution.
Are the furniture pieces restored or in their original condition?
We believe in preserving the 'wabi-sabi' or natural aging of our pieces. Most items undergo minor structural stabilization by master carpenters in Japan using traditional joinery, but we keep the original patina and finish intact to maintain historical value.
Can I request a specific type of Japanese antique not listed online?
Absolutely. We offer a bespoke sourcing service for collectors and interior designers. If you are looking for a specific Meiji-era piece or a particular style of screen, contact our team and we will search our network of private dealers in Japan.
How should I care for my Japanese wood furniture?
Japanese antiques are sensitive to humidity and temperature. We recommend keeping furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Use a soft, dry cloth for dusting and apply a high-quality natural beeswax once a year to maintain the wood's luster.
