Kasuri is the Japanese style of ikat, where the threads of the material are resist-dyed before being woven. This piece is specifically e-gasuri (picture kasuri) as the image created is recognizable. This process was first practiced in the 12th Century.  This is an exceptional example of the dyers work  alternating between motifs of an Okame Mask, and the character ”寿” read as kotobuki, a word meaning both congratulations and longevity of life.
